BlindMind.net strives to technically equip users with solutions and choices. Whether blind or visually-impaired, many users shy away from technology, or just think it's too hard. Still others carry around many different devices for different tasks, not realizing that they can virtually all be replaced with a good mobile/cell phone.
Why I got into this is a pretty simple story. I have a degenerative eye condition which rendered me legally blind in 1994, and continues to degenerate. Having worked in the IT industry for the last 15 years in technical, sales, and customer relationship roles, I have first-hand experience in what it's like to no longer be able to work to a previous level due to a lack of technology, and then enjoying the results of a solution for that particular problem. As my condition has progressed, so too, has the need for solutions changed over time.
Until a couple of years ago, I was unable to do much more with a mobile phone other than make and receive calls. It wasn't until I got a Smartphone with screen reading software, that I even knew what I was missing! What a difference. It's like when internet first became widely-used. All of a sudden, I could text, and browse the internet, send and receive mail on my home account, as well as make use of the hundreds of Smarphone applications for accomplishing countless tasks.
It nearly broke my heart when listening to a local talk radio program on AM radio. They were discussing cellular phones, and what amazing features they have that people do not use. A blind man called up, and said "I'm blind, I can't use it for anything other than making and getting calls. I can't do anything else on it because I'm blind". Try as I did, I could not get through to the station. I wanted to tell him "that's not true! You can do anything with your phone that a sighted person can. It just takes a bit of wanting to and know-how"
So here we are. We do product reviews to tell you what products will work with your screen reader or magnifier. We talk about the benefits of one screen reader / magnifier over another, and which third party application do NOT work, to save you time. Want to know how to convert a store-bought audiobook to play well on your mobile phone? Or how to read DAISY audio or text/audio books on your phone, or even how to turn text/e-books/PDF's/DOCs into audiobooks? We show you how.
We encourage participation and wish to build a strong community of like-minded users who enjoy discussing technology and how it's been adapted to suit our needs. We ask you to submit content in the way of a useful link, doing a product review, sending in a News article, or sharing with others in our Forums.
If BlindMind.net really believes in a product, we will often sell it online in our STORE. We are a community first, and a store second. We will never push an inferior product because there's a better margin for us. While we may accept advertisers for this site, we will never pull punches in our reviews, if the advertiser happens to put out a terrible product. Also, we will sell only products that we are prepared to support, and that we have tested ourselves personally.
Please let us know what we can do to make this site better for you, and please treat everyone else with the same respect you expect from others.
Sincerely,
The BlindMind.net Team
